MinimalDesignPhuket — Teak Wood Care Guide

Preserving the architectural beauty and natural soul of your teak furniture.

1. The Foundation of Care

Keep your teak furniture beautiful and long-lasting with simple, regular care.

  • Sun & Heat: Avoid direct, prolonged sunlight and extreme heat to reduce surface checking and color fading.

  • Stability: Place furniture on level surfaces; use felt pads under legs to prevent scratches.

  • Handling: Lift, don’t drag, when moving your pieces to protect the joints and your flooring.

2. Daily & Routine Maintenance

  • Dusting: Dust weekly with a soft microfiber cloth.

  • Spills: Wipe spills immediately with a slightly damp cloth, then dry with a clean cloth.

  • Detailing: Vacuum crevices and slatted areas to remove debris and dust buildup.

3. Cleaning Your Teak

Routine Cleaning Deep Cleaning (1–2× Per Year)
Use mild dish soap diluted in water. Use a dedicated Teak Cleaner to remove deep dirt.
Wipe with a soft cloth or sponge. Follow manufacturer instructions to remove gray oxidation.
Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Always rinse well and allow to dry in a ventilated area.

4. Oiling vs. Natural Finish

Teak is a living material. You decide its final aesthetic:

  • The Oiled Look (Warm Honey): Restores the original vibrant color. Apply teak oil sparingly in thin coats after cleaning. Reapply 1–2× per year for outdoor pieces or every 1–3 years indoors.

  • The Natural Look (Silver Patina): Allow the wood to age gracefully into a silver-gray tone without oiling. This is purely aesthetic and does not harm the structural integrity of the wood.

  • Pro Tip: Do not mix oil and sealant. Always test any product on an inconspicuous area first.

5. Protection & Seasonal Storage

  • Surface Protection: Always use coasters and trivets for hot or wet items.

  • Outdoor Care: Use breathable covers when not in use for extended periods to avoid trapping moisture.

  • Monsoon Season: In Phuket, it is vital to store furniture indoors or in a dry, ventilated space during heavy monsoon rains or prolonged inactivity.

6. Advanced Care & Troubleshooting

  • Water Rings: Sand lightly with fine-grit paper (following the grain), then refinish or apply oil.

  • Grease Stains: Absorb with cornstarch or talc, brush off, then clean with mild soap.

  • Mold/Mildew: Use a diluted bleach solution (1:10 ratio with water), rinse thoroughly, and dry.

  • Scratches: Use fine-grit sandpaper (220–320 grit) along the grain to smooth out surface marks.

7. Maintenance Summary

  • Weekly: Dust and check for spills.

  • Monthly: Wipe down with a mild soap solution.

  • Annually: Deep clean and/or oil (if maintaining the honey color).

  • Pre-Monsoon: Inspect, clean, and secure your covers or storage space.
